The Dordogne is one of the most beautiful areas in France and is very popular with tourists. The Dordogne is not a coastal area so there is no sea or sandy beaches. However there are many other attractions like canoeing on the rivers, swimming and there are some rivers with sandy beaches. The scenery is dramatic and scattered with lovely towns and villages to visit both in the countryside and along the rivers. Take a riverboat ride to see some beautiful views and chateaus.
For those who like to sample different foods this is an area renowned for truffles, walnuts, duck, goose and foie gras. The local markets offer a wide variety of local produce to try, especially a large selection of cheeses, but beware, these can be very expensive so be sure to find out the price before you choose a large piece or you could get a nasty shock.
France is famous for its wine and the areas around Bergerac and Bordeaux are the places to head for, with vineyards stretching in all directions as far as the eye can see.
Winter temperatures tend to be mild and summers can be long and quite hot.
